What I think…
This might be my favorite re-telling of "Beauty and the Beast" to the extent that I have read it at least five times since I first came across it (and find considerably better that Mckinley's other version of the story Rose Daughter).Despite it being aimed at a younger audience, it is rather well written and doesn't come across as a children's book. McKinley does a great job of fleshing out the Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont version of the story, developing the characters and adding in extra little details that come in to play in a larger way later in the story.
I love that it's written from Beauty's perspective and that McKinley starts off the book with Beauty recounting the story of how she gained this nickname when her given name was Honour, as well as how as she and her two sister's grew up this became somewhat of more a joke.
To sum it all up…
Perfect read for anyone who likes fairy tales that don't deviate too far from the original. ♥
