On "Life of the Party": A Book Review

Title: Life of the Party: The Remarkable Story of How Brownie Wise Built, and Lost, a Tupperware Party Empire
Author: Bob Kealing
Genre: Non-Fic

About the book…
A look at the early history of Tupperware in the 1950s, the role Brownie Wise played in building up the brand, and how she was forced to leave the company due to conflict with Earl Tupper.

What I think…
A good while back I saw an American Experience episode on the history of Tupperware and the role Brownie Wise played in building it into a well-known name, so when I came across this book I knew I’d be giving it a try.

I found it to be well written and informative. It offered a lot of information not only on Brownie, but on the role of Tupperware parties in the 50’s and the way the general public reacted to them. It was incredible to read about the lengths people went through to be a part of the organization and I feel that the author did a good job of capturing this aspect and just how important this was to its growth and popularity.

One thing I liked was that while it was sympathetic towards Brownie, it also reasonably addressed the way her behavior began to cause problems and, ultimately, led to her loss of her position. I also enjoyed getting to learn a bit more about what motivated her and why she was so good at her job.

To sum it all up…
An interesting look at the history of a company and a product that still resides in many kitchens today.

  1. I almost checked that out from the library a couple months ago but didn't because I already had a couple biographies in my hand and I knew I wouldn't get to it.

    1. I nearly didn't get to finish it before it was due back, so I know how that goes. :)
